The Chairman said the business on which they had met was-not of a very pleasant nature, but he supposed they would have to make the best of a bad job. Dr Monckton was then examined, and in reply to Mr P.Cooke he said he came to Nelscn a year ago last April; he believed. The debts mentioned on the list of liabilities had all been contracted in Nelson, except one of £100, and £50 for which,he had been sued by the Bank of New Zealand upon a bill which he accepted. It was the Bank of New Zealand which compelled him /to.file, for they wero about to issue execution', and he filed tin order to secure his other creditors. He had considerable Hopipsl of pulling himself together, and was 'beginning gradually to do so. The statement made his position appear much ■worse than it really' was." He had put down his.assets at what, heithought they would fetch ata forced sale. Mr P. Cooke said'he thought it was rather a reckless manner in which the debtor had proceeded, for during sixteen months he had incurred debts amounting to £450 in round money, and as he had probably made some money and paid it away, he appeared to have I been living at the rate of £500 a year. ■ ' Mr Moore thought they had not analysed the list of liabilities, for if these were looked into it would be seen that a good deal of money had been spent on building a stable, and on items which, though necessary for a medical man could not be classed as expenses of living, In reply to Mr F. Jones the debtor said he had never become bankrupt before, and that h« had always paid 20s in the £ previously. He lived for .20 years in the Invercargill district, and always paid his way. He was much deceived as to the Opening which existed in Nelson, and his present position had not been brought about through want of hard WOrk.; -~,:,; ..'; -

After some further discussion on the feart of creditors Dr Monckton said he was unable

to say how much money he had received from patients whilst he had been in Nelson, but he had received £200 during that time from Home. :;The chairman and one or two creditors having made further remarks, Mr Scaife was, upon the motion of Mr Cooke, un.auimously appointed creditors' trustee, and the meeting then terminated.
