THE LYELL DISTRICT.

[FEOM A COEBEsIbNDENT.] Mmm& interests, whioh have been of late rather dullish, are awakened up now by the rerivalism of the extremely successful ends obtained in the "United Alpine." Shareholders who twelve months ago were " whipping the cat " over calls are now almost beßide themselves with the future that seems to attend tho careful working. Economy and judgment of tha management of the claim, besides the monthly cleaning up, is so satisfactory t) ail concerned—not omitting the healthy dividends. The great event of the day is, however, the extremely well distributed gold whioh is visible throughout the s'one in the reefs at New Greek. It is causing great excitement not only in this district, but more especially in other mining districts, as such generally distributed gold in stone JHas rarely been seen in the Lyell's most palmy days. The " United Victory" claim has now been proved, by shafting to the depth of 200 feet and tunnelling 150 feet, to be not a little, but great wonder. There are now about 100 tons thrown out, which is calculated would produce about £2000. This is 'not being picked, but merely " taken as it comes," so it is no reason why the present shareholders should not be well satisfied. The o,ther^claim,—the " Mountaineer " —has been vigorously bought up by IReefton investors, who will, more than likely, 'sbon.Beoure.thft'lUhitedjyiotpry." Vik i/^.J All here are very anxious that tbo track whioh is now cominecced towards New Greek from Zala Town was finished, so that if the track was completed the holders of the reefs would want a stiff piece of bullion to buy them out, and especially as the men interested are not exactly capitalists, but the right men in the right place. As yet no arrangements have been absolutely completed for the erection of the contemplated 5-head battery j but I believe the desire of all concerned is to raise capital from private resources, as from previous experienc > they think it better for tbemse'.Tfl' and Banks, and that the less they have to do with the latter institutions the better for themselves. Here is a chance now for any of your Nelson speculators, and by paying a visit to the ground oan easily satisfy themselves of facts. There are two or three reefs of minor importance (whioh I shall refer to in my next letter to you) which will embrace the" yirospeots of alluvial mining, and whioh is increasing largely up the Buller. The community her* deplore the fact that traffio, which could be cultivated to Bueh an extent between here and Nelson should be cancelled by the state of the roads; but as roads and road maintenances are such drags, less laid soonest mended.
