%* The Public Works' Statement, whiot was delivered in the House, last pjght; will be found in our Supplement this mornitig. Eably Closing- Association.—The usikl monthly meeting'of the Early prosing j|Lssooiation was held last night, when ib was suggested by some of the employers present to start a Trade Protection Society, consisting of the employers in connection the Association, and a committee.was ordered tojbe formed at onoe for forwarding the objapt. There were few drapers or drapers' assistants present. Perhaps the day. may corner-when the assistants will regret their inattentionjto their own interests by negleoting thafof this Association. A vote of thanks 'was passed! to those who have Bigned the.canvas papers, aiid to the Press for their kind siipport of the Association, ''' '.-.;. ~ : Want of a Constable. —On'two occasions during this week some of the" residents jof Richmond have felt the annoyance arising from the want of a.resident Oon'Btable r Siahmond ia not without the germs of larrikinism, and the evil will spcadily exhibit',,all }'.i hideoueness if the authorities do no^prdviiie some means of putting the fear1 of,' the law forcibly before the rov. dies, who consider ill a good joke to annoy the peaceable ( and lairabiding potion of tho community. , Inexpensive Pootb .idgb.— W,o h; ,'y » been shown tiie design of a footbridge, which can be oonstruoted at a very small cost. Two posts, a few feet of p'anking, and .lengths jof.. wire, are all the materials needed for'the erection of the bridge, which, it is claimed, is' a strong and safe structure- The Pelorus Road Board, we learn, are going to give the design a trial in that district, and it is suggested that one or two of this description*iof footbridge might be placed where required on the route between Nelson and Havelook. Road Boards ohd others interested would do weir to obtain a copy of the design of the bridge! ; Enteetainment.—The next entertainment to be given by Mr Thompson's amateur corps drumatique will, we are informed, take place on Wednesday weok, 18th inst., at the Theatre5 Royal, and will comprise two 6x relle'nfc pieces, " My Turn Next" and Betsy Bakor," in which fresh and well-known local amateur talent will be engaged. There will also be some good music, both musical and instrumental, between the pieces, and a programme will, we are to/d, be issued shortly. We wish this effort every bus ?03s on account of the object in view, namely, the assisting' tha^ poor [of Nelson, and whom from public statements tha Nelson Aid Society would seem wanting in funds to help. As already mentioned :in in our columns, the Oommittre>who have the getting up of the entertainment referred to, finding that the Nelson Aid Society-declined, to countenance it, has succeeded in obtaining the aid of Mr Shallcrasa, Relieving Officer, who will keep the amount realised in a separate fund, and distribute it, as far as possible amongst those who would have been reached through the medium of the Society already, mentioned. ■ k : "" A Change Against a Watchwa-keb,— Walter Smith, who for some time oarried on business as a watohmakeiy&c, in Bridge street, Nelson, has been arrested at ;Greytown, near Wellington, on a charge that he, being the bailee of a certain watch valued' at £10, the properly of George Edwards, aC Macksmith, residing at Pox Hill, did convert the same to his own use. The defendant will foe brought to Nelson the first opportunity, and the charge w?U then be investigated, i Magistbates' Court.—Yesterday,. 0. H. Brown and C. de Y. Tesche'aaker, Esqs., J.J.P., took their seats on the Bencl\in order to hear a charge laid by W. H. S. Harris against John Stone, charging him under the Vagrant Act with using insulting language towards the complainant, with intent ;to provoke a breach of the peace.. Mr, Banhy appeared for Harris, and the defendant having been duly called, and not having responded to his name, a messenger was dgspatphed to the Pol;ce Qffice to, ascertain whether- the summons had ' been' served. After a short delay the Inspector appeared :n Coi"1!;, and accounted for the iion-ser\ice of the snmmons, which was thereupon," ordered to be served at once, and made'returnable on Wednesday next. -<!••• IMPOBTAJO! OoAIi DISCOVaIIX AT P-ICTON.— Captaia M'Gillivray, of the s.s'Wanaka, which ariived from Pieton yesterday,*brought over some specimens of ooal from, a aeam disclosed under exceptional circumstances. For aome time past prospecting operations have been prosecuted on the flat near the town of Picton, for ooal, t-aces of which have from time to time, been found in the locality, but no very decided results had been realised. ;A team has, however, been now revealed without any prospecting, and which bids fair to be of most important consequences to the trade of the port. A landslip on the f*ce of one of tb.e hills olose abutting on to the harbor has revealed a 14ft. seam of good merchantable brown coal, whioh, tnfced, proves of fair average steam-making quality. ■ • The seam is olose to deep water, so that vessels may go up alongside and take in forgoes with a!t possible despatch and at a minimum of expense. When the Wanaka lefc Picton a tunnel had been put 7ft. into the fa1? of the seam, and the ooal was hardening and improving in qualty from the specimens first taken from the outcrop. The discovery has been made on private land, but this in no degree lessens its importance to the welfare of the district, and by no means indirectly to the coal trade of Wellington.— Neio Zealand Times, Aug. 5. Simple Remedy cor Coughs;—Al correspondent of the Medical Times says^that the popular prescription for spasmodic asthma; in certain parts of the country is to eat heartily of wateroresses, and it is said that the, remedy is successful. One of the hoasehold -remedios tried in Wellington for the cure of the troublesome coughs pervading at p'ecsnt in nearly every household is a decoction of watercress roots a handful or more boiled in; a 'quart; of water until reduced to a pint, and tt-e liquor len mixed with a quarter of pound of a treacle. " Whitewashing " is being done wholesale at Taranaki. A solicitor attended niie meetings of creditors, and applied for the., certificates of discharge of ten bankrupts ?n a week. The surveys on the Waimate Plains are being pushed vigorously ahead ■ (says the"" Hatoera Star). There are now five paiaef^ in the field, and Mr Fmnerty's ia ordered to go on as soon as possible—probably next week, as he has oi^y to finish a sinal! portion of the blc 3k of 3000 acres that he has been surveying near Stratford. Itis expected that 7030 or 8000 acres vs.'U be ready for sale by the Ist of September. . ; .. ,- X) The November show of the Cbristchurch/ Agricultural Association gives promise, ol being the most succeuful yet Held. • ■ ; .;'.
