The total uumber of sheep iv the Colony at the date of the last Census was 13,069,338. Of these 4,446,023 were in Otago, and 3,560,301 in Canterbury. Cattle, 578,430, of which 147,923 were in. Otago. Horses, 137,763-38,103 ia Otago, 37,117 in Canterbury. The annual production of butter and cheese is given at 7,379,417 lbs and 2,701,908 lbs respectively. Canterbury heads the list in butter, closely followed by Otago and Auckland, Wellington being not far behind. In the manufacture of cheese, however, Canterbury far exceeds all the rest of the Colnny "taken together, the annual production, out of a total of 2.70 L.908 lbs for the Colony, being given at 1,828,136 lbs. The number of threshing-machines was 374 ; reaping-machines, 4829. 173 of the former and 2330 of the latter were in Canterbury, and 143 and 1725 in Otago. The quantity of grain and flour " on hand" is given in numbers without any indication of the unit of quantity assumed, but the proportion shows very largely in favor of Canterbury, especially in wheat, oats, and barley— the quantity of the first; being given at 1,295,686, out of a total for the Colony of 1,726,944.
