THE NEW GIRLS' SCHOOL IN TOI TOI VALLEY.

Thb handsome structure which has just been ereoted in Toi Toi Valley, near the Railway Station, is a prominent addition to the publio building! of Nelson having any pretensions to architectural beauty. This building has been provided by the Education Board as a school for girls, and is constructed to acooinodate about 250 scholars. The ground upon which it stands has been levelled by excavating the hill side, arid consequently the school stand upon a sufficient eminence to give a more imposing effect, and there is also an advantage from a sanitary point of view. The sohool occupy a space 78 feet by 40 feet. In the centre there are two large ornamental circular headed coupled window?, and in the oentre is the main entrance with portico having an effective tout ensemble On either side of the entrance is an ante-room, and the class rooms, three in number, measure respectively, 36 feet by 20 feet, and two smaller ones'3o : feet by 20 feet. The walls of these are 16 feet high, and the roof, being an open wrought one, the ventilation of the building, whioh is roofed with slate, should be all that eould be wished for. At the rear of the building is a separate entrance with two lobbies, each 20 feet by 8 feet, intended to be used as cloak rooms, and the building is surmounted by a bell turret, the apex of which is 45 feet high. The wood used in the construction is all of the best seasoned, and according to suitability of purpose is of totara, rimu, and red pine, all who have inapeoted the . building are unanimous in their prabe of the design and workmanship displayed in every particular. Mr John Scott, the architect, is undoubtedly entitled to very great credit for the originality and effectiveness of his designs, and Mr Andrew Brown, the builder, has reaton to be proud of the faithful manner in whioh he has carried these out. These sohools, it is announced in this issue, will open on Monday next.
