NELSON COLLEGE SPORTS DAY.
The athletic sports at the College yesterday, which took place in accordance with the annual; custom, prior to the Christmas vacation, fully bore out the expectations expressed in this journal last year j for although the highest honor, the challenge cup, fell to the same competitor who gained the distinction then, the second and third on the list w;ere only promising competitors on that occasion, and the relative distance between the competitors yesterday was less than it;was last year, and on the whole-the achievements were more satisfactory than they have been hitherto. The races in which tbe senior Collegians competed were all, inoluding the hurdle races and those events in which they were pitted against all comers, remarkably well contested. The jumping also was especially good, and particularly so was the vaulting with the pole, in which event the struggle for supremacy lay between Arnold and a Collegian; named Harle. Both competitors had successfully—: although gradually and with their skill taxed to the utmost—accomplished a jump of 9ft lLin, when on the string being raised to. 10ft, Arnold in essaying the leap caught hia foot in the line, which entangling in the posts brought thorn both'down, and unfortunately'in succession they struck, him on the head, the spike in the second one severely; cutting him. Arnold certainly accomplished 0 his last "jump more successfully than did Harle, and upon the occurrence of this unfortunate accident, although Arnold wished, notwithstanding his injury, to make another attempt, Harle generously admitted himßelf beaten, allowing his opponent to have accomplished the 10ft leap, which from'his previous; efforts he. appeared able to do.1,. j>r Kesteveri, who was' on the ground,'attended to Arnold's injuries, which required the services of a medical man. There was a large attendance at the College grounds yesterday, and more than ordinary [interest appeared to be centred on the various events,
