RICHMOND SCHOOLS.
i The annual examination of these schools by the Local Committee, prior to breaking-up for the midwinter holidays, took place on< June 22nd. On the schools assembling in the afternoon, prizes were awarded to the most proficient scholars as follows : I Boys. ! First Class.—T. Thompson, 1 5 — Feist, 2 • F. telling, 3 ; A. Tovey, 4. . 1 Seoond Class.—T. Malcolm, 1; E. Saywell, 2 ; L. Sutton, 3 j E. Malcolm, 4; J. Harkness, extra prire. j Third Clasia.- Thompson, 1; — Brock, 2 ; j-Hodder, 3; — Eobinson 4; — Gifford, 5; G. Bell, extra prize. I Fourth Class.—A. Malcolm, 1 5 W. Wilkes, 2; C. Hammond, 3. I Fifth Class.—A. Wilkes, 1; E. Davidson, 2 ; E. Talbot, 3. S Sixth Class.— — Corby, 1; — Steer, 2. j Giels. j First Class.—Jane Bell, 1; S. Eobinson 2 ; E. Sheat 3 ; A. Gifford, extra prize. \Mr Barnicoat explained fthafc it had been 'extremely difficult to fix the order of merit in this class. j Second Class.—L. Thompson, 1; S. Harkness, 2; L. Saywell, 3. Davidson, 2. , lOn the conclusion of the distribution of prizes, tho Chairman (Mr Talbot) intimated that the schools Would re-assemble on the 17th proximo, and that the examiners wero1 pleased with the progress made puring the past year. H» trusted that- those boys 4nd girls who had not obtained prizes would not be discouraged, but would strive to be more successful next year. ' ..... ( . ■ , Mr J. Harkness stated that he intended offering a special prize to be competed for by both schools immediately after the holidays. |
Inquest at the Post.—An inquest was held on July 5, at the residence of John Symons, Esql, at the Port, touching the death of the late Mr Charles Elliott. Dr Boor, in - the absence of Dr Squirei. acted as Coroner, and Mr J. Garrard was foreman. Mr J. Symons deposed to Mr Elliott calling upon him shortly after 7 o'clock yesterday morning, that their interview lasted some two or three minutes, and then Mr Elliott departed. In about fonr minutes afterwards & servant informed him that Bomeone wai lying upon the gravel walk in front of the house, and he at once went to see who it was, and found Mr Elliott, quite dead. Dr Scaly deposed to seeing the body of Mr Elliott. On arriving he found him quite dead. There were no marks of violence. He learnt from Dr Williams that deceased had had two slight attaoks of paralysis m time past. Mr Elliott was abDut 65 years of age, and his heart was very feeble. He considered the cause of death was rupture of a vessel on the brain, together with disease of tho heart. The jury returned a verdiot that M* Elliott died from disease of the heart, ;
