the following:—Captain M'Coll, of the, brigaotine Kate Moynahan, which was Wrecked in the ■ Mapawatu river last Tuesday, ,has furnished us .with the following statement: —The Kate Moynahanr waß a brigantiDe of 102 tons register,, belonging Co the port of Newcastle, N.S.W. We .arrived off the^Manawato bar on Now Year's Day, and anchored,; the bar not being fit to take. Next day, at 12 30 p.m., the signal was made from the station to take the bar. We got under weigh, and passed the bar pll • right. When well inaide the wind suddenly shifted from S.W. to S., taking us aback. Before we could get the sails filled and steerage-way on her again, she took the ground on the North- Spit. _ On Monday we lightened her; Tuesday morning's tide floated her, safely off. The pilot wished the stream anohor taken out further to windward before making sail, and in getting the boat alongside to do this she got adrift. It became neoessary to launch the dingy, which, in the hurry, of launching, was swamped alongside. By the time the first boat got back, tho flood tide waa done, and with the ebb tide the vessel dragged -her anohor and drifted on to the bar,; bumping very heavily, bilging herself and filling with ■ water. Made a Burvey of the vesßel, and with the1 pilot's concurrence, finding nothing more euuld be done, we abandoned her on Wednesday. She was insured for £1500. , -" '»
