One case of personation is already made the subject of a criminal action, and the party is under arrest afc Charleston. Dr Henry, in returning thanks, eulogiaed the Eeturning Officer, Mr Warden Giles, who was just about leaving the district for Wanganui after eight year's residence, Dr Giles, in a feeling speeoh bid adieu to his Westport friends. DtmEDiN, January 5. The Cromwell company crushed 521 ounces from 240 tons of stone. The shareholders each received 1365s in dividends in six weeks. January 6. The body of the boy Williams, who was drowned in the Tomahawk on Christinas day, has been found near Anderson's Bay. At the Supreme Court, Begey, charged with burglary, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Dr Hocken, the Coroner, apologised to-day in the Supreme Court for having ommitted to send down the depositions re the George-street fire. The apology was accepted and the matter dropped. The charge against Jenkins for arson is postponed j till next session, owing to certain legal flaw* in the examination. At the inquest one argument urged waa that the coroner waa interested in the National Insurance Company, the association that held the policy over the building and stock destroyed. The Times has a strong artiolo on the action of the Government in appointing all the papers that have tupported Government in the elections as " Gazette* in Bankruptcy." It considers that the action of the Government is nothing more nor less thsn bribing the Press. . . Sir Julius Vogel was nominated on Wednesday for Clutha against the wish of his friends. ■••■;.. 1' ' January 7. retire from the Waitaki contest, and thus Bastings' return may be considered certain. The polling at Queenstown to-day was :—Handera, 93 ; Bradshaw, 37 ; Cope, 4. I At the Coleridge election the polling was :r—Wason, (abolitionist), 168 ; Tbawill, (mild supporter of .the Government policy, 162; Bluett, the old member, (abolitionist) 71; Jepson, (provincialist) 53. ; The Kaipoi Rowing Club has one pair-oared, and one four-oared crew training for the Wellington Interprovincial regatta. The testimonial awarded to Joseph Day by the Royal Humane Society, for saving tho .life of a boy named Morton, when a boat capsized at Sumner last year and three men were drowned was presented to "him by the Superintendent this afternoon. The Superintendent spoke warmly of the courage shown by Day in saving Norton's life. ■! The grain market is dull. - A ? little wheat has changed hands at Ss 9d, but millers are offering 4s ; o;ats, Is 9d to lsiOd offered ; barley, quiet, quotations nominal; butter,. 7|d,to 8d; Cheese, 6£d to 7d. , • ; Geahamstown, January 7. ; The result of the polling for the Thames, will probaly be to put in Mr Kowe and Sir George Grey. The polling, as far as is known, for the first three is as follows :—Grey, 960 ; Rowo, 860 ; Vogel, 682. The only return to come in is from Mercury Bay, where there are probably 100 electors,: so that Sir ; G.; Grey and Mr'Rowe's return are certain.' ; There was great excitement during the day, but the greatest good fueling prevailed, and there was no rowdyism. Mr Rowe was cheered and drawn through the streets in a! carriage, the horses being taken out. Sir J. Vogel's return could, it said, have been guaranteed if he had been earlier in the field. Mr Charles O'Neill had no show from the beginning owing to his late appearance in the field. : Auckland, January 5. ■ Margaret Wall, the Thames murderess, who killed her,two: children with, an axe, was found not guilty, on the ground of insanity. An order for her imprisonment during the Queen's pleasure was made. January 6. ' The Eden election resulted in the return of a Greyite, 263, to Taylor's 212. '. Oamartt, January 5. j A man was found lyingon^the beach between two others. The latter were asleep and he was dead. The two were taken into custody. Two empty flasks were found near them. Greymouth, January 5. The weather has been extremely hot for a week past. A young lad named Cederwall, aged nine years, died from sunstroke this morning, i. ■ [ The bar is in excellent working order. The brigantine Sarah Mary, drawing nine feet, was towed in to-day at low water. Wanganui, January 6. The Rangitikei elsotion caused great excitement kst night, and is exercising considerable influence in favor of Bryce and Vogel. Bryce addressed a crowded meeting of electors last night. Great enthusiasm prevailed. He confined himself mainly to matters affecting the election, and gave but a brief outline of his opinion, of the affairs of the Colony. At the conclusion a unanimous vote of confidence swas carried, as also a similar vote in favor of Sir Julius Vogel. ■ . .- Rangitikei, January 6; The poll for the Rangitikei district took, place yesterday, and resulted in the re-election of Mr Ballance by a majority of 74. The numbers were as follows:—Ballance, 201; Bull, 127. Majority for Baliance, 74. . TAtEANGA, January 6. Tauranga election —Morris, 144 ; Kelly, 72 ; Read, 30; Marsh, 1. Marsdek, January 6.
