STOKE PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The examination for prizes of the above school took place on Tuesday, the 28th Daoember, 1875, being conduoted by tLe Rev. J. P. Kempthorne. Al the close of the examination, be congratulated the children on the creditable manner in which they had acquitted themselves in the various subjects, especially so in reading, recitation and writing; a marked improvement being noticeable in the former on that of last year. He then proceeded to distribute the prizes to the successful scholars; after which the teaoher (Mr Barnett) said he was sure they had much reason to thank Mr KempMiorne fcr the great pains he had taken with them, and for the impartial manner in which he had conducted the examination. Se hoped those who were unsuccessful this year would not be discouraged, but after the short holidays would return to their school duties with increased energy, and with the determination to win in future.
The following is the Rev. Mr Kempthorne's report to the Local Committee, together with the prizo list :~ fO THK CHAIEHAN OF THB SCHOOL COMMITTEE, SXOKB. The children seem to be well and carefully taujht in reading, writing, and arithmetic. la the reading I noted a marked improvement this ye« over last; the general character of the writing in the school is good, being neat and legible; the f/writing of some of the first class is really a credit to the school. As to their •onduct, the children were well behaved, and discipline is well maintained. I beg to enclose a list of the school children, with the marks obtained by each in the separate subjects ; also a list of those to whom the general and special pr«zes were awarded. I am, &c, John P.
