CITY COUNCIL ELECTION.
DECLARATION OF THE POLL.
At 12 o'clock yesterday, at the City Council offices, his Worship the Mayor made the official declaration of the polling of the previous day, whioh was as follows :— Wright, William 676 Haddow, William 627 Stringer, Thomas Hoyle ... ... 560 Hooper, James Bichard 527 Lightband, Martin ... 478 Mabin, John Eowe 456 Jennings, William 358 Levien, Joseph Henry ... 351 His Worship declared the first four gentlemen duly elected. Mr Weight said being first on the poll he would first return thanks. He sincerely thanked the burgessses for electing him to that proud and important post, more especially a3 he had not to thank the Eadical Keform League. He went in thoroughly untramelled, and having plenty of time at his disposal, could undertake to conscienciously discharge his duties. (Applause.) "M.v Haddow said that although the Eadical Eeform League had chosen to nominate him, he had frequently refused, but considerable pressure had been put upon him, and he had ultimately consented to stand. (Applause.) He went into the Council, not to stand for any clique, but for the common good. He (Mr Haddow) had been a member of previous Boards, and he was kno»n to the electors. He added " You have given me your votes, and I will give you my services." (Applause.) Mr Houpeh said, he had served them in a similar capacity for seven years and he hoped he would con: tinue to serve them in the same spirit he had hitherto done. Like another speaker, he had not to thank the Eadical Eeform League for the position in which he had been placed. In all cases he had always voted according to his conscience, and he believed, to the good of the city, and he would continue to act the same. (Applause.) Mr. Jennings said he was very much obliged to those who had voted for him. He was an old settler, but he was not going fo sound his own praises. With regard to those who had not voted for him, he (Mr. Jennings) would not fall out with them. (Applause.) Mr. Levien would thank those citizens who had voted for him. It was a law of Nature, and was not to be wondered at in this casej that the most weighty had fallen to the bottom. Had he (Mr. Levien) been lighter probably he would hare been found higher. (Laughter.) But he was not the least annoyed about it. With regard to the Burgess Eoll and election, he thought the matter had been conducted in an unfair and illegal manner. His Woeship said he would take no notice of Mr. Levien's assertion that the election hai been an unfuir one. He had acted impartially and to the best of hia ability —(Cries of "Hoar, hear")—He would, however, take a written protest from Mr. Levien, His Worship remarked that out of 600 persons on the roll but 270 had voted, although there were 1170 votes recorded, but of these 32 had been rejected in consequence of their being improperly filled up. Mr. Levien then handed to his Worship the following written protest: — " Nelson, September 11,1874. " To the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Nelson. " Gentlemen, —Please take notice that for myself and the other candidates that were not present at the official declarafcionof the poll for four councillors, that I deem the present election unfair and illegal, in consequence of giving a large portion of the electors moro votes than they were legally entitled to, and any other acts performed that are not in accordance with the Acts made and provided. "Joseph H. lievibn, " Eatepayer and Burgess." The proceedings then terminated. [We understand that Mr. Stringer was absent from town, having been called away to the Moutere.]
