The report of the Committee on Augmentations was read and ordered to be published, together with the minutes. The further consideration of the report was postponed until next meeting. The Town Building Committee was authorised to settle with Mr Woolcott as to the amount to which he is entitled. Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Eout, " Thafc an application from the inhabitants of Waiperna, Grey Valley, for a subsidy, together with a similar application from Mr Metcalfe of the Lyell township, be acceded to, on the usual conditions." Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Smith, " Thafc £4 % 10s be allowed to the East Takaka school Committee to meet equivalent subscriptions towards the cost of a chimney for tbe new school there," Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Beoad, " Thafc fche consideration of Mr Lloyd's application for a lease of No. 156, Westporfc Education Reserve, be deferred until Mr Roberts, be again communicated with." The Bishop op Nelson to move, " That £15 be granted to " the Spring Grove Committee for fche erection of porches or verandahs, both for fche Spring Grove and River Terrace schools, and also for internal repairs ; the above application, by inadvertence, not having reached fche Board when considering the annual grantß." Mr Ceesswell to move, " That £3 10s be granted to the Stoke Committee to enable them to carry oufc the recommendation of the Central Board, with regard to the substitution of iron for shingles on the roof of the lean-to of the teachers' house." Mr Holdee fco move, " That from October Ist, 1874, the salary of the teacher of Fox Hill school be increased from £60 to £100 per annum." The following is the Report of the Committee on Augmentation :— To the Chaieman of the Centeal Boabd. Sih—Your Committee, after considering the very difficult question of augmentations, thafc has so often engaged the attention of the Board, have come to the following conclusions : — 1? Thafc the augmentation of teaohers' salaries, with some reference to tlje number of children taught, is in itself fair and expedient, and affords an incentive to, and reward for, the energetic performance of their duties on the part of the teachers. 2. l'hat the principle just laid down, and heretofore applied to only the head teachers in each school should be extended to the assistant teachers, and fchafc augmentation in all cases of new appointments of head teachers be divided between the head teachers and the assistants in the following ratios:— Where one assistant is employed, two-thirds fco go fco the head teacher and one-third to the assistant. Where two assistants are employed, three-fifths to go to the head teacher, six-tenths of the remaining two-fifths to the second, and four-tenths fco the third teacher. 3. That until the new principle comes into operation, fche salary of the assistant; in Hampden-street school be increased by £12 per annum, thafc of the senior-assistant at Haven-road by £12, and that of the junior-assistant afc Haven-road by £7 per annum. 4. That no alteration be made in the salary of the mistress of the Preparatory school, but that the salary of the assistant at that school be increased from £27 fco £36.
