THE MOIJTERE ROAD.

To the Editor of the Colonist.

' Sib, —I read last week in the papers the report; of the proceeding) of the Waimea Road Board, at their last monthly' meeting, and was not a little surprised to see that they instructed their secretary to apply to Government for the money voted by the Council last session, to complete the proposed alterations on the road over the hiila to the Moutere. I should like to know what they want with the money. Of the first grant of money for this purpose they received £250; they did not turn a single spadeful of earth on the road and yet the balance of this sum in last years account of the Road Board, as published, has, if I recollect right, dwindled down to £107. How is this P The Moutere Board received an equal sum (£250); they have had many chains of heavy work done for it and hare a balance of £45 left. I hear that the Waimea Board has only 18 chains (within tlieir boundary) to do of the proposed alteration, and to judge by the pegs, as seen from the road, I think the work might be considerably lessened by cutting through the spurs lower down, so that thai sum would have been amply sufficient to finish that portion of the road. It is true, the Waimea Board twice invited tenders for the work, but they were not accepted. This proves how wrong the secretary was in his estimates. The Board has been rather negligent in the work, but as this is a portion of a provincial trunk line of road, in which the general public travelling that way, take an interest, the Board ought to push on this work, even if their district is not so much concerned. As I have pretty often to travel the road and see, climbing over the hills, the almost level road, made by the Moutere Board, lying deep beiow, I cannot help thinking, it wonld be the better way to get it finished if the whole wera handed over to the Moutere Board ; there could* be no better time to have the work done than just now.—l am, &0., Tbayjslkb.
