Mblbotthnk, May 8. The as. Barodn arrived on Sunday night. One of the Lascars on board having small-pox, she was put in quarantine. The mails were fumigated before being landed, and the pasaeugera (48 in number) were landed at the sanitary station, where they will remain 14 days. The Baroda proceeded on to Sydney, where she will be quarantined, and another steamer will probably be chartered to carry the outward mails. The branch steameris in quarantine at Adelaide.——There are two vacancies in the Assembly—Portland and the East Borough. Mr. Higginbotham has consented to stand for the latter. ——The question of the mail terminus is exciting attention. Victoria strongly objects to Earl Kimberley's proposal, and the Chamber of Commerce and the mercantile community supports the Government in the opposition to the extension of the present service. The Governor visits Ballaraton the 29th, and will stay two days. Frederick Walters, cashier of a wool firm, arrested for embezzlements, committed suicide while uuder remand. The Hon. H. M. Murphy, member of the Legislative Council, has been fined £10 for cruelty to a dog, by stabbing it with a knife. Smith and Brady, for the Woragee murder, are to be executed on the 12th, and Pierre Forham, for the murder at Kangaroo Flat, on the 20th. In the divorce case of Trimble v. Trimble, it was stated that the respondent was in New Zealand. The missing barque Springbrook, which left I Barwon in January last, has arrived at Cardwell, Northern Queensland, the passengers having encountered great perils. The captain has been suspended as an imbecile. She will leave Cardwell to-day in charge of Lieut. Walters, R.N. Great praise is "due to Dominick Daly for saving tho ship, he having laken all the observations and brought her through Torres Straits.r Tenders will ba opened for the New Zealand loan at the Bank of New Zealand to-morrow. It ia likely that the Government will arrive at some definite course respecting the mail service before the meeting of Parliament next week. The first white woman born in Tasmania, died at Hobart Town on the 4th of May, aged 70 years. ——Commercial.—Wheat scarce at 63., very prime, 6s. 2£d. Oats are very saleable up to 4s. sd. Sugars are firm, the late advances being well maintained. Large sales of brandies have taken place, at an advance owing to the advices of the destruction of vines in France. The news by the mail states that the prices of all articles are on the increase. New Zealand hemp and kauri gum are both dull, with few sales. Stdnet, May 7. The Hon. Mr. Samuel is likely to visit Auckland before proceeding to Englund It is stated that the Californian contract will be decided before the j departure of the mail. The ship Belle of the Isle was wrecked during a gale. The crew were taken off by the Velocipede. At Mr Weutworfch's funeral on Tuesday, there was an immense procession, all sections of the community were represented. Sir James Martin delivered an oration. The steamer Fire King has been wrecked on Manning river.Capt. Beck, of the barque Lyttelton, was thrown fromhis horse at Newcastle, and broke his neck. May 8. The Government intend calling for tenders for a Funded Debt Loan, in a fortnight. There is great excitement amongst the Freemasons through the Bishop of Newcastle having prevented the Masonic ceremonies at Captain Back's funeral. The Baroda will be quarantined, and the mails delivered after being well fumigated. Newcastle shipping.—Arrived May 3.—Velocipede, from Auckland; Emile, from Lyttelton. Sailed. —Woodville, for Auckland. Adelaide, May 7. Mr. Myers has received a telegram from Sir James Ferguson dated May Ist, stating that Governor Musgrave had left Natal, and would arrive at the end of June. The Northern goldfields continue Bucoessful.
