MOTUEKA.

Considerable damage wag done to roads and bridges by the heavy rain oflast month. It is no) often we hear of persons being placed in danger of their lives in this district through floods, but an instance oceured a. short time since when a settler, Mr. Or. Remnant, and family, were so placed by the riaing of the Orouoco (a small tributary of the Motueka river), and bad to leave their house, expecting it every moment to be WHshed awoy. One of the chimneys had fallen, and there was three feet of water in the house, although it stands on piles some 18 inches o(F the road. At great risk of their lives they succeeded in reaching the bf»rn, where they remained for three hours, on some boards placed across the beams. After the river went down, it was seen that considerable damage had been done by carrying away the fencing, and covering the land with silt nnd rubbish.

We have not heard if the rain (which commenced on Sunday last, and has not cesised for two hours together, up to the present time) has done any damage up country, but in Motueka and Riwaka the potato crops have suffered severely, and iv some instances growers will have to buy for their own use, and. there aro very few of u& who will escape

altogether. It is a bad job for ftfotuetca as we had above an average crop, and the price is looking better than it has done of late years.

The Cadet Corps of this place mustered at the drill ground, on her Mojesty's birthday, the 24th instant, and having been put through various movements, concluded by firing several volleys in honor of the day. Three oheers were then given for the Queen, three for the Prince of Wales, and three for the beautiful Princess Alexandra, after whioh substantial rations of plum cake »vere served out, to which ample justice was done.
