NELSON BOARD OF WORKS

A meeting of the Board was held on Friday evening. Present: Messrs. Percy (chairman), Dodson, D. Burns, Webb, R. Burn, C. Y. Fell, J. Hounsell.

At the last meeting of the Board, it was resolved that a corrected list of the persons interested in the proposed new sewerage works, should be drawn up on the bnsis of the assessment roll for 1870-71, so as to ascertain the exact value of properties liable; and that tho opinion of the solicitor of the Board should be taken as to the position of the Board in the matter.

It was reported that a new list had been made up as directed, and that the total value of the property was £75,000, and the value of that liable to special rate in the district; was £47,499. The vacation in the lawyers' offices had prevented the opinion of the solicitor from being obtained, but that would be done coon. PBISON XABOE. The deputation appointed to enquire as to the disposal of the labor of the prisoners, reported that tho Provincial Secretary would in future direct its employment. THE GOBSE TENOE AT THE PAESONAGE. It was reported that on being waited on, to ascertain when the removal of this fence would take place, the Rev. Mr. Johstone had stated that he did not think it was his duty to remove it, but that of the Board or the Provincial Government. A conversation followed, from which it appeared that leave was granted to Mr. Johnstone to erect a wooden fence to encroach about 18 inches on the street, on condition that the gorse fence should be removed. This fence was declared to be very dangerous, and after some pointed discussion, it was resolved that if the fence were not removed within a week, the Board would withdraw the privilege, granted during its pleasure of allowing the encroaching of the wooden fence, and would remove it from the footpath. THE BOAD IN PBONT GS THE POST-OFFICE. On the motion of Mr. Dodson, it was agreed to ask leave of the Superintendent to take back the kerbstone of the footpath in front of the Post-office, so as to widen the road at that particular part, where more space was wanted. Also, that a lamp should be put in front of the Post-office. NUISANCE NEAB THE GOIDEN IIEEOB.

Mr. Fell said that in the meantime the question of the main drainage was, in a measure, shelved, at least for a time, another matter connected with it required attention. This was the nuisance existing near the Golden Fleece Hotel. There was formerly a water-course through Mrs. Richardson's property, and a ditch afterwards went through it. This ditch had lately conveyed not only flood waters, but also sewage and drainage from other premises ; and Mrs. Richardson, he thought, should be applied to to allow the ditch to be reopened and cleaned out. Whether this was done or not, Mr. Fell contended that some steps should bo taken by the Board to abate the nuisance that existed. Fever of a low kind existed in the neighborhood, and he learned, from mndical authorities, that it was not abating. No delay should be allowed, for the town was considered an excellent place as a sanitorium, and it ought not to be permitted to lose its reputation. The Subvetob said that Mrs. Richardson had refused to allow the drain to be reopened, as she was about to build on the ground; but a temporary drain could be brought across the road, with an outfall into the ditch.

On the motion of Mr. Fell, it was resolved that a temporary drain should be formed, M suggested by the Surreyor,
