NEWS OF THE DAT.

Philharmonic Concert.—We observe that the Philharmonic Society advertises its first concert to take place in the Provincial Hall, to-morrow evening. The programme has been carefully selected, and the society, which has lately gathered considerable strength, has been assiduously rehearsing to secure a successful entertainment.

The Ccllins and Carroll troupe repeated their performance at the Odd Fellows' Hall last night, to a fair house. They leave to-day for Blenheim, where they purpose performing on Thursday evening.

Telegraph Extension to Motueka.—lt is satisfactory to learn that, in accordance with the recommendations of the Provincial Council and Executive, tho General Government have decided to extend telegraphic communication from Nelson to Motuoka. The want of such an intercourse as this will open up, has been long felt in that district, from which a considerable quantity of produce is shipped to the West Coast and elsewhere, and, therefore, it is very desirable that the farmers should be in a position to get immediate intelligence of tho state of the markets at any particular time. Tenders are invited for supplying the necessary poles. The line will run along the ordinary mail road.

The two first gontlemen to represent the Province of Marlborough, and the two latter Nelson Province.

Mortality, from aggravated diarrhoea, has been great among children at Christchurch. During the last week the same disorder has been somewhat prevalent in Nelson.
