The p.s. Chables Edward, on her last trip from Hokitika, took no fewer than 30 passengers, chiefly business people for Reefton, 27 of whom landed at Greymouth, and proceeded to their destination by way of the Grey Valley. A telegsam from Greymouth, dated January 13, states:—" The river protective works have broken down; if a flood comes half the town will be in great danger of being washed into the sea."

The various Chrißtchurch boating clubs are amalgamating to select one crew to compete in the Interprovincial race.

The clipper ship Cabbiok Castle, left Port Chalmers, for London, on January 18, with a large and valuable cargo of wool, meats, gold, &c, and eight passengers.

The ship City ov Auckland, Captain Ashby, was to leave Auckland, for London, on January 17. She takes 40 passengers, and a cargo valued at £44,244. Amongst her cargo were 28 pieces of mottled kauri timber, shipped in its rough state. This kind of timber, bo much admired in cabinet-work, would no doubt be in demand if sufficiently known.

The sohooner Letitia, from Levuka, arrived at Auckland on the 15th January, after a passage of 10 days. During the passage a robbery of £95 took place, but the authorities were unable to find any clue to the perpetrators.

The B.b. Keeea met with a heavy gale off Castle Point, on January 19. Her bows dipped under, and 50 cases kerosene were washed off the deck.

The graving dook at Port Chalmers is completed, and has been handed over to the Chairman of the Dock Trust by the contractors. The formal opening will take place on an early date. The ship England was to sail from London, for Wellington, on the 4th December, with 100 Scandinavian emigrants, and another ship, with 150 more, wu to tail during this mouth, fox Canterbury.

An iron barque, 290 tons register, was launched from the yards of Messrs. Hall and Sons, Footdee, Aberdeen, Scotland. The vessel is classed 100 Aat Lloyd's, and is 130 feet long, 25 feet beam, 12^ feet depth of hold. She is named the Hokitika, and haa been built for Spence Brothers, for the Colonial trade.

The number of wrecks reported in England for the year 1871 amount to 1603.
