?[ e °gagement between our forces and Te ' floi-ohoro. The rumor which we pub%!°rt ler day, and which was circulated in *by Maiho Ngakuku, seema to have been

utterly without foundation. It was stated that the engagement had taken place at Horohoro, on the 21st October. The Hero left Tauvanga'on the 27th, and no information of any encounter had come to hand there at that time. Had any engagement taken place at Horohoro, or anywhere in the district, information would have been received at Tauranga certainly within a clay of the event, there being telegraphic communication between that settlement and Rotorua.

In additon to this, we may say that Mr. Wrigley of Tauranga, now in town, has letters —one from Captain Preece, dated 18th October, who was at that time at Te Teko, some seventy miles from Horohoro, so it is not at all likely that his forces were engaged, as was reported ; and another from Messrs. McPherson and Talbert, storekeepers at Matata, dated 24th Oct., who mention nothing whatever of the reported engagement, or of any fighting at all in the district. Had anj thing of the sort taken place, they would have been sure to have heard of it. Prom information from the Waikato we find that To Kooti, has not found his way through to that district, so we may put down Mi. Maibo Ngakuku's tale as an entire fabrication.
