STAVERT & CO. O THE ELEOTOES OF SUBUEBAN NORTH. GENTLEMEN,—I have been much astonished and rather amused to find that Mr. Wastney has, WITHOUT MY. sanction, attached my nome to ■an advertisement "Earnestly-requesting" you to attend a certain meeting at Hillside School. I have nothing at all to do with calling the meeting in question, and if I were inclined to " earnestly request" anything at jail about the matter, it would be that you should ( stay away. | I am, Gentlemen, ■' ■ Yours respectfully, 6 A. SHUCKBURGH COLLINS.
TO THE ELECTOES OF SUBUEBAN NORTH.
Gentiemen, —I am not at all astonished at anything, that Mr. Collins does —nor much amused. Now for the facts :—After Mr. Richardson's meeting, in company at the Black Horse, I remarked that I considered that we had begun at the wrong end in holding such meetings as that. I stated I thought the Electors should have held meetings, and decided what line of policy they were prepared to support, and then select their candidate accordingly. " Yes," says Mr. Collins, " I quite agree with you that it is the right thing to do, and as it -is not yet too late, I will join you in calling a meeting for that purpose." This he repeated over and over again, and had nothing further been done, and he had taken the initiative in the mat! er, I should have considered myself bound to have taken my share in any responsibility that might have been incurred; but as I only assume to be a plain working man, and he aspires to be a gentleman, I suppose we see things of this kind through very different lights. But in order that there might be no mistake in the matter, I wrote out the advertisement as you Bee it printed, leaving a blank for the date when the meeting should be held. I then went to Mr. Collins's house, showed him what I had done, and asked when it would suit his convenience for the meeting to be held. When the time was mutually agreed upon, I afterwards filled up the blank to that effect, and that is the only addition made to the paper after he saw it.
You ■will, of course, use your own judgment whether you will act upon Mr. Collins's request, and stay away from the meeting or not, Probably sortie one has told him your attendance will result in the injury of the cause he ia advocating; hut, relying upon your love of fair play, I hope you will make a point of attending. " - I am jour obedient •errant, 4? _ B,^4raSK\
