THE MURDER ON THE NELSON SOUTHWEST GOLDFIELDS.
In our last we published a telegram from Q-reymouth, which stated: —
" A miner named George Patnodi was murdered on Tuesday last, at Noble's diggings, Gey river. He was 'stabbed in the heart, and died immediately. The assailant is unknown, but is supposed to be a woman."
On Saturday last, we received the following additional intelligence: — " Gbeymotjth,. Deo. 31. " The man who was murdered at Noble's diggings, was named George Patenande. An inquest has been held at the Ahaura. From the evidence it appeared that he was stabbed by a girl named Margaret Quigley, shanty-keeper, because he broke into her bedroom on the previous night. He returned next day and used coarse liberties with her, which she would not allow. She was usingta knife at the time, and ran out of tho house; he followed, and on the impulse of passion she ran it into his side. He died ten minutes afterwards. A verdict of wilful murder was returned, and she was committed for trial on the Coroner's warrant. She admits all the facts. She passed through here this morning on her way to Hokitika."
