Steam Commpnjccatpn *yu Tobrep S-tbai*.* _r? We take the .following from the Newcastle■ (New South Wales) Chronicle of the 22nd January :—VT^» proposal ■ fpr .the establishment of. a postal seyvipe between these Colonies and England, via Toms. Straits, whiob hw, for ye^rs put, been *dvc>c-»Md by
leading men, has been recently revived, and has assumed ft more definite and practical form than hitherto. The representatives of the Governments of New Soulh Wales, New Zealand, and Queensland have, we understand, agreed to submit to their respective Cabinets a proposition that a postal service between Sydney and England by way of Torres Strait » and Batavia should be maintained by these three Colonies—New Zealand to benr one sixth of the cost, such sixth not to exce.-d £10,000 a year; and thafc the cost ofthe servi. e for carrying the mails between Sydney and New Zealand as may be agreed upon, not to exceed £5000 a year, shall be borne by the three Colonies, New Zealand paying one half."
The Matoaka.—Our evening contemporary on Tuesday evening published a telegram from Christchurch, stating that the Matoaka had arrived safe in London. We most sincerely hope it may be so, but we very much fear thafc fche news, based on a telegram from Hokitika on the arrival there of the Gothenburg, is too good to be true. The Sydney Morning Herald containing the English mail telegrams has the following in its latest special telegram, dated London, December 10: —" Arrived: Ramsay; Matoaka posted at Lloyd's as missing." We fear that the Matoaka's name being put down under the head " Arrived" has caused somebody who did not read further to jump to a conclusion. We do not see how any later news can have been received. — Wellington Independent, February 3.
