CONSECRATION OF ALL SAINTS' CHURCH, NELSON.
T.ITT3 commodious new church, erected for the use of the Western Parish of Nelson, of which the Rev. Mr. Thorpe is the incumbent, was consecrated in the usual wnv by his Lordship the Bishop of Nekon, on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The building was filled by the congregation present. Mr. Sinclair, the Registrar of tho "Diocese, read tho petition for consecration, and thereafter, the deed by the Bishop. Then followed the consecration service, after which the evening servicp was read, Mr. Thorpe, Mr. Johnstone, Mr. Mules, Mr. Lewis, and his Lordship taking part therein. The Bishop then preached a sermon from the text Hngsai ii. 5, "In this place I will give peace, saith tho Lord of Hosts." At its close his Lordship mentioned that the land on which the building stood had cost £200, and the building and fittings about £1078 more, in all, about £1278. Of this sum, £100 had been borrowed, one half from the Diocesan Loan Fund, at a low rate of interest, and to be repaid by instalments ; and the other half as a debt on the building, which could stand at interest^ until the -congregation was able to wipe it off. The balance had been raised by subscription, with the exception of the sum of £171, which was still deficient, and which would require to be raised as soon as possible. We believe that towards this object over £30 was collected at the close of the service, and other collections will take place on Sunday next, for the same object. The building is only a portion of the complete design, which includes a tower, so soon as lunds can be obtained for its erection. It was erected from the plan of Mr. Beatson, of whom the Bishop spoke in terms of praise, both as an architect and for the attention lie bestowed on the building while it was in progress. Mr. John Scott was contractor.
