THE CATTLE POISONING CASE AT MOTUEKA. George William Brookes, painter, at Motueka, was charged with poisoning cattle belonging to Dr. Park. Prisoner, who waa defended by Dr. Combe, pleaded Not Guilty. Dr. Combe having addressed the Jury in defence, the Judge summed up, and the Jury retired. After an absence of about throe hours thoy gave a verdict of Guilty, and the Judge sentenced prisoner to two years' imprisonment. Prisoner's wife, who was in Court at the time, burst into tears on the sentenced being pronounced. WOUNDING A WIFE. Joseph Sradcock, a cab-driver, was accused of feloniously wounding his wifo with a knife and threatening her life, with the alternate charge of assault as a misdeamonor. He pleaded Not Guilty.
