COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

THE LONDON WOOL MARKET.

(From the Some News, Sept. 2.) Up to August 27. according to Mr. Helmuth Schwartz' circular, the following had been offered in public sale :— 76,887 bales Port Philip; 21,202 Sydney; 16,765 New Zealand ; 4958 Adelaide ; 4112 Van' Diemen's Land; 5 Swan River ; 10,561 Cape ; 295 Sundries. —Total, 174,775 bales.- Of this quantity about 11,000 bales hare been withdrawn. . . There is, says Mr. Schwartz, no change in the position of Australian wools, but Capes have, during the last four or five days, suffered a fresh decline of 7d., and sell now quito as cheap as in the beginning of November sales last year; good scoured and fleece are even id. to Id. cheaper. The bulk of the wools is taken by the home trade, as foreign buyers are still thinly represented, and operate cautiously. No particular complaints about bad trade are advanced, but business is evidently not sufficiently brisk to prevent the large quantities from pressing upon the market in an unprecedented manner. I quote all descriptions 2d. lower than at the close of the MayJune series. Most well informed persons in the trade consider that the weight of wool this series, and that for November, would not be too much if anything like a good trade was doing, but with a sluggish demand for goods, and their probable accumulation, no doubt the home trade will act with extreme caution, and prefer to be light in stock.
