We give it for what it is worth, and without knowing anything whatever as to the accuracy of the statement: —"A;correspondent sends us the following—sfv. "if, Edwards, of the firm of Edwards and Co., of Nelson, h&s gone to Wellington to take the necessary steps for' forming a company to work the Mount Rochfort coalmine. When a gentleman of his large oapital and1 well-known energy haa'seWousJly taken the matter up;' success ma/ be looked upon as certain. It will make a Very different place of Westport, and will employ a large number of men liere. J^V iron railway must be laid down to tbe niino, for a WQoden tramway would hot stand the tear arid wear of the traffic. When this is done, and the mine in full work, the Bullei? will weur a much more lively appearance of a Saturday night, and house property will quickly look up."

MoSikiNUI Coal.—Supplies of: the IVfohikinui coal1 continue to be received in Westport, and the coal, by its improving quality, seems to be gaining favor with the public. Two small cargoes Were received this ■week, and, as the working parties have improved their mining appliances, the supply is more likely to be regular in future.— Westport Star, August 12. Eobbery at Charleston. —The Westport Times, of August 12th, states:—" Another serious robbery took place on Sunday night, the unfortunate victim in this oase being Mr. Nahr, of the Empire Hotel, Charleston. No trace of the rascal has yet been discovered." Accident at Greymouth Whahp.—The Grey River Argus, of August 11th, says:—An accident has occurred at the wharf, by which Messrs. Kilgour and Perotti have lost about ten tons of coal. The coal was stacked on the whnrf beyond the transit shed, aud one of the stringer 3on which the landing-stage of the wharf rested gave way, allowing the stage to sink down towards the river, and shooting a quantity of the coal stacked on it under the wharf and into the river. Championship of Westland.—The Westland Observer understands that another sculler's race, for the Championship of Westland and £120 a-side, is On the tapis. A Mr. Galin-aith, of Ahaura, near Greyraouth, challenges either' Mr. Giblin or Mr. Hawkins to try their skill against him for the above amount and the championship (at present held by Giblin); the parties to row in equal boats or best and best boats. . . . ■ The "Grey River, Stsam Tug Company have i declared a dividend of 10 per cent, for the last nine months. Stone Breaking Machimc. —One of Appleton's patent stone breaking machines has been put in operation at Dunedin. It is situated on the reclaimed land south of Rattray-strsot, and is driven by a six 1 horse-power engine. It; breaks any sort of stone at the rate of about 100 tons, or 65 to 70 yards per clay. The machine \s very simple, and the way in which the hardest boulders are crushed in its iron jaws is really wonderful. A great many persons have visited it while at work, and" a'l havo expressed surprise at the speed with which the broken stono drops through. It is breaking stone for use in the construction of the graving dock at Port Chalmers. — Grey River Argus. Thk Late Murder in Victoria op a New Zealand Miner—Our renders may perhaps remember that in The Colonist of June 26th, wo published some particulars oi a dreadful rmirdor at the Bullock Creek diggings, Victoria, in which . the unfortunate victim was a miner named Martin Roouev, who had lately returned from Greymouth, New Zealand, where he had been so far successful as to accumulate £200 as the result of his trip from Victoria. Aftor lodging £180 of that sum in a Melbourne Bank, Rooney proceeded to the Castlemaine district, where he became acquainted with one John Hogan, who was in destitute circumstances. Rooneytook him into his tent, and provided him with food and shelter. The two men were seen in the neighborhood together for a few days subsequently, anil the 7th of June was the last time Rooney was seen alive, but. for some days afterwards Hogan, who said that " his mute1' had gone to Bnllarat, was seen to visit various publichouses, nnd to spend money in drink and card-play-ing. Ultimately suspician was aroused, and Hogan was watched, and followed into the tent lately in the joint occupation of Rooney and himself, where tha dead boriy of the former was discovered lying in the tent. Hogan was of course arrested, and committed for trial. The case came on at the recent Castlemaine Criminal Sessions, when the prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to death, without the hope of mercy.
