DANGERS OF THE OVERLAND ROUTE TO THE GREY.
We are informed I - his Honor the Superintendent that it is necessary to warn those who purpose going overland to tho Grey from Nelson, that in this season of tlie year there is great danger to travellers from the flooding of rivers on. the route. Men get trapped between two rivers which it, is impossible to cross after rains, ancl they can neither get back r,or forward. Provisions tli ere is none, and their own stock is soon exhausted, ancl starvation becomes imminent. Before leaving the Grey River, his Honor saw a man who came down the river on two totara logs, lashed together with flax and creepers. This man had left his mates a long distance up the river, trapped in the manner wo have described. Starvation was staring them all in the face, and this rrian. determined to trust himself to the chances of the river rather than the certainty of starration, which he declared must have befallen them where they were. He reports the bush through which he travelled to be excessively dense, and the progress exceedingly slow. We shall look with interest for the reports of the arrival of the parties of diggers who, to the number of 150, have gone overland within the past ten days.
* This has been done, and the size of claims reduced, as mentioned in our columns a week ago.
