CORRESPONDENCE.

THE LATE-SUPERINTENDENT AND THE WAIRAU MASSACRE MEMORIAL. To the of The Colonist. S IR . — I must request you to.publish the enclosed letter (copied from the records in the Superintendent's office,) which should have appeared with the other correspondence in your Tuesday's issue, on the subject of the Wairau Massacre Monument. Its proper place in the series would have been immediately after the note of Mr. Saunders, ending " there is no record in this office of any letter having been written by Mr. Barnicoat on that Bubject." I am, etc., j! W. BARNICOAT. Provincial Secretary's Office, Nelson, 17th February, 1865. Sir—Referring to the Memorial addressed to the late Superintendent by yourself and the persons named in the margin* relative to the erection of a monument to tho memory of your friends who fell at the Wairau Massacre, I have now by direction of His Honor the Acting Superintendent, to forward to you the enclosed copies of documents, and to request that you will be kind enough to confer with the other memorialists and reconsider the question of removing the remains of your friends to Nelson, and communicate your wishes to Government at an eaily date. On reference to the letter from the Superintendent of Marlborongh, it will be seen that His Honor is not disposed to allow any grave to be disturbed for the purpose of exhumation, unless the relations of all the persons buried in such grave are unanimous in wishing that the remains of their friends should be disinterred, and I am to state that Hia Honor the Acting Superintendent of Nelson concurs in this view of the case.

1 have, etc., ALFRED GREENFIFXD. Chief Clerk.
