THE COLLINGWOOD GOLD-FIELDS.

To the Editor of The Colonist.

Sib, —The public mind has of late been so entirely absorbed by the rush to the West Coast that these diggings have been to a certain extent shunted off the line of attraction, but Collingwood has in reality no reason to hang down her head, she continues to hold her own, amidst the other thriving districts of the Province. Indeed there can be no better evidence of the productive nature of these diggings (which have never been properly prospected), than the fact of the return of those miners who may be said to have travelled the whole world in search of the precious metal, and who give the preference, after all, to Collingwood!—one bmc\\ fact, is worth a bushel of pointless paragraphs. That this gold-field has of late been somewhat somnolent is partly to be attributed to there having been for many months no one appointed to look after it, but now that the new Superintendent has entered the field with his pruning knife, and the new Commissioner is cleai-ing off all arrears of business, a very different state of things may be expected.

The steam engine is at work night and day and is driving well; and while other places are assailed with, fever and sickness, we possess a clean bill of health. Thus does Collingwood progress, and she will continue to gradually go a-head, if not thwarted by existing jealousies, and by that doubtful piece of machinery ycleped— the Waste.Lands Act ; or to use a homely phrase, if we do not "kill the goose that lays the golden eggs." I am, Sir, &c, FAIRPLAY. June, 1865.
