CAPTURE OF A CHINAMAN NEAR MUDGEE CHARGED WITH MURDER.

Lately a Chinaman shot dead the senior constable ofMudgee (New South Wales), named Ward. On Satm-day, 18th Feb., the murderer was apprehended t«^ miles from Cobbora, by senior-constable Todd, constables M'Mahon and Burns, and a half-caste tracker, named Hughes, who volunteered his services. Constables Burns and M'Mahon took through the scrub, Todd with the tracker took the river. Burns and M'Mahon came on the Chinaman in a gully; he fired at the police, and went into the scrub, where he was lost for some time. The two constables then made back to senior-constable Todd and the tracker, and all started again, and the tracker soon picked up the Chinaman. Several shots were fired by the police and the fugitive. A shot from Todd took effect in the Chinaman's neck and head. Burns rushed up to secure him, when the Chinaman raised himself from the ground, and tried to fire again, when Burns struck him on the head with the butt-end of his gun, smashing the stock to pieces. The Chinaman was brought into Mudgee, and placed in gaol under medical treatment, having been dangerously wounded.
