LATEST PARTICULARS.

The buildings destroyed were the Victoria Hotel, belonging to the estate of the late firm of Williamson and Crummer; Mr. Phillipps's store, and the Loan Office. In Fort-street, there was the Caledonian Hotel, and an old building occupied by Rattray and Co., which was pulled down. The contractor for the wood work of Mr. James's new building was Mr. James Philcox, who was not insured.

The same paper in its Thursday's issue says :—-The following is the amount for which, insurance policies have been effected in the different offices on the buildings burnt yesterday—New Zealand Insurance Co., £2,800; Royal Insurance Co., £2,000; New Zealand Mercantile Insurance Co., half of which is re-insured in London, £1,500; Australasian Insurance Co., £800; Liverpool, London, and Globe Insurance Co., £700; Northern Insurance Co., £500; Imperial Insurance Co., £800; total, £9,100. It is expected that this sum will be reduced by means of salvage. An inquest as to the origin of the fire was held on Thursday, and was adjourned until Monday (yesterday.)

The following alleged incident at the battle of Nukumaru is given in the Wanganui Chronicle of the 28th ultimo, but it is of too barbarous a nature to be believed:—"A wounded Maori was making his escape from the field of battle, when a boy ten or twelve years of age, who came from Auckland with the 50th, knocked him down and killed him with a piece of stick. He was rewarded by a gift of 20b. from one officer and 10s. from another."
