OUR GOLD FIELDS.
NEWS FROM THE OKITIKI DIGGINGS.
{From The Colonist, February 14.)
By the steamer Wallaby, which arrived in Nelson on Saturday last, (Feb. 11) news of a somewhat exciting nature regarding the diggings at Six Mile Creek was received. We learn that there are about 1,300 men at the new rush to this place, and it is reported that all are getting gold, the lowest takes leing, according to the reports of the bank clerks, about half an ounce a day; while many are getting gold in very large quantities. We cannot give particulars, and we shall not repeat the rumors lest they should be exaggerated; but the fact that no one has returned, and that the first and second mate of the steamer Wallaby, with two of her seamen levanted at Okitiki in order to go to the diggings, gives coloring to the flourishing reports which are prevalent. Definite accounts from sources which can be relied upon are wanting, because, ■we believe, the mail and the most of the gold was sent, or to be sent by the Nelson. But that the news is good there can, we think, be no doubt whatever. On Saturday and Monday the office of the owners of the Wallaby was beseiged with diggers taking passages, and far more than the steamer could accommodate were desirous of going by her. There were various rumors afloat at the Okitiki, respecting a robbery of gold to a considerable sum at the Six Mile Creek; but the statements are so conflicting that until the letters arrive with authentic accounts we think it best to say nothing moie on the subject.
