"OH, THE DUSTY MILLER!"
To the Editor of The Colonist.
Sir, —I see the intelligent supporters of Mr. Barnicoat have lately allowed a man to drive a miserable white horse up and down Nelson streets, with a large placard on each side, with the words,
" Vote poe Barnicoat and Cheap Floto." Would it not be well for them to send a good fat bay horse up into the country amongst the farmers, with placards,
" Vote toe Barnicoat and Deab Wheat." The fat horse would require a very sharp quick man to go with him, and the placards must have the "dearwheat" on the one side, for the farmers to look at, and the " cheap flour "on the other; and be so contrived as to turn easily round, in case of his meeting any diggers or other persons who might have votes and who would rather have cheap flour than dear wheat. The housekeepers in town, too, should be carefully cajoled into the belief that it is all Mr. Saunders' fault that flour ever rise 3, as he will never import any wheat until we are just starving for want of it; and all the farmers in the country must be made to clearly see that Mr. Saunders is always importing wheat before they have had a chance to sell theirs, so that they can never get a good price for it. Let me tell you, sir, persons can understand these sort of stories much better than any of your long talk about principles, and measures, and consistency, and independence. I am, &c, BUNKUM.
