SOUTHLAND.

(From tie Southland Kews.) Opening op the Electric Teleohaph between iNYETICATtGILL AND 81/UFI? HaHOB. Since our last summary telegraphic communication, by means of the electric wire, has been established betweeu Bluff Harbor and the capital of tho province. The line, which

extends a distance of twenty miles, was oponed for the transmission of messages on 9th February. There are at present only two officers on the line, viz., one at Bluff Harbor, near the Jetty, and the chief cilice, Dee-street, Invercargill. Daniel's batteries are usedfor generating the electric current, and the instruments which are used for the ■ transmission of messages are Sieman, Halse, and Co.'s ink recording. "With one slight exception on the day of opening, the working of the line has been most complete; and, judging from the number of messages transmitted since the opening of the line, we are happy to believe that the mercantile community and the public generally are appreciating the rapid means of communication. The Southland Railway.—The road from Invercargill to the Bluff presents a most busy aspect. The construction of the railroad, which is rapidly progressing towards completion, has caused a large population to assemble all along the main line of road, and numerous hastily-extemporised dwellings, stores, and hotels have sprung up on each side of the highway. At the Mokomoko, one of Davies' patent locomotives may be seen daily puffing along, conveying metal and other material for making the new road, now being laid down parallel with the line of railway.
