DESTRUCTION OE MANILA BY AN EARTHQUAKE!
THOUSAND PERSONS KILLED AND MANY
THOUSANDS WOUNDED
The Sydney Morning Herald of 11th August, contains the following disastrous news received by telegraph from its' King Greorge's Sound correspondent: —
On the 3rd June, at 7.30 p.m., a circumambient flame was seen to rise from the earth and gird the city of Manila. A most terrific shaking of the earth then took place, lasting scarcely a minute, but in that short time nearly the whole of Manila was reduced to a heap of ruins.
Upwards of one thousand people were killed, and many thousands wounded.
The British Consultate was entirely dcs troyed. The city is nearly deserted, as the edifices left standing threaten to fall suddenly.
Before the earthquake took place sulphurous odours were perceived, a rumbling was heard like the firing of ordnance, and others like the approach of an immense locomotive and train.
Not a single foreigner is known to have been killed.
The palace, cathedral, and all the public buildings are thrown down or shaken from from their foundations. The factories and hemp presses are also destroyed.
The survivors of this calamity are fe'arfu* and nervous of another visitation.
