There have been new gold-fields discovered at Maryborough. An impudent robbery took place at the Currency Lass, Sydney, on the night of the illumination. Some thief walked up stairs, and by the means of skeleton keys opened two drawers, from which were abstracted jewellery and other valuables to the value of forty pounds. The robbery was not discovered until several days after. An inquest was held at Balmain upon the body of Mr. James Porter, who died from the effects of an injury received while firing a royal salute on the 11th instant, from an anvil, which served the purpose of a cannon. Verdict—Accidental death.
Mr. John Layton, formerly master of the Destitute Children's Asylum, Sydney, was: found dead, kneeling by his bed in the attitude of prayer. A verdict was returned at the coroner's inquest, that deceased died by the visitation of G-od.
New Gold-field.—A shaft was lately bottomed at South Grundagai, N.S.W., at 57 feet deep about half a mile below the old lead, by Messrs. Hawthorne and party, with the prospect of one ounce to the load, two feet wash-dirt, and plenty of room for upwards of a thousand men to set in at once. Mr. Hawthorne is one of the oldest and most persevering diggers on this gold field, and has now a fair prospect of being handsomely remunerated for his exertions. It has always been the opinion of experienced diggers that a payable gold-field would eventually be discovered in that locality, and several parties have been prospecting lately,, but have gradually given up through want of funds. Claims are being rapidly taken up. I saw the gold that was washed out of two dishes full of dirt—it was fully twelve grains. The third dish was equal to the two first, and yielded half a-pennyweight of very fine gold.: A party sunk a hole fifty feet and left ; if they had driven four feet further they would; have struck the lead. This is a lead such as. has not being struck before in this district., —Correspondent of the Monaro Mercury.
Somo attention has been lately given byseveral of the flock owners in Brisbane, Queensland, to a new specific introduced by Mr. Allan, from Melbourne, to cure scab.
The prospecting at the Peak Downs, Queensland, has not yet developed any lead,! but the gold already discovered gives "token that a large number of the gullies are ; auriferous, and the prospectors are in high1! spirits of obtaining further success. \
