WELLINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A General Meeting: of the members of the Chamber of Commerce held yesterday afternoon (August 12) at Messrs. Bethune and Hunter's Exchange Rooms. The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed—-the. Secretary read a despatch from.'.th"c..Secretary for^thcrColonies, in reply to a Memorial from the Chamber of Commerce on the new Tariff, to the effect that he did not see sufficient grounds to advise her Majesty to withhold iier assent to that measure. The following resolutions were then carried j unanimously:— • i 1. That the Chamber of Commerce, having heard that the Superintendent has signified to the Managing Committee of the Wellington Steam Navigation Company his intention of not recommending to the Provincial. Council a greater subsidy^ than that /.granted by the Province of Hawkes Bay, begs to represent to his Honor its,conviction that a subsidy of at least £1000 should be granted by this Province to maintain the efficiency ;of the service, and to ensure permanently for the commerce of this Province the advantages which the Wonga Wonga haa been the. means of conferring. 2. That the Chamber hopes that the opportunity which will be affordedby the; meeting of the Provincial Council, will be taken advantage of by the Local Government to ensure the speedy construction of the •deep water wharf, as well as the required improvement in the Inner Harbor Light, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded" to his Honor the Superintendent bjr tKe Chairman. 3. That it is expedient, in order to afford the members opportunities of taking part in the discussion of the various questions brought before the Chamber, that an Alteration be made inßule XX; and to give effect to the proposition, it is suggested that the following words be substituted for those at present embodied in the Rule referred to:—•" That there shall be a General Meeting of the Members on the second Tuesday • in every month, and at the Annual Meeting in July a full Report of the proceedings of the Committee for $ha previous' year shall be made and a statement of the Eunds of the Chamber, submitted and verified by auditors appointed for that purpose at the General Meeting in the month of April." 4. That the foregoing resolution having met with the approval of the Chamber, it is proposed to amend the Bule XIX, by striking out the words " the second j and," by which one of the committee meetings will be abolished, and a general meeting will be. substituted. 5. That any member who may be desirous of bring- j ing forward any subject for discussion, may do so, by giving notice of his intention at any general meeting, or by recording such notice in a book to be kept for /the purpose, at least seven days previous to the aext meeting of the members. 6. That a list of honorary members shall be formed, upon which the names of retiring members may be placed, but no name shall be inserted therein but by special vote of this chamber. 7. That the thanks of this Chamber be given to the chapman and members of the select committee for the satisfactory—report prepared by them on the commercial condition and prospects of the port and province of Wellington. .
