THE COLONIST. NELSON, FRIDA Y, AUGUST 19, 1059.
Owing to the press of matter caused by the late important European Intelligence, we are compelled to omit our usual leader. The ivar r it will be seen, is rapidly progressing, and the Austrian army is spoken of as having been defeated two or three times. With regard to the last we should reserve our judgment, for the accounts reach us only through French sources: and as we find that the so called victory was occasioned by the desertion of duty of Hungarian troops, who laid down their arms and marched over to the allied army, sufficient reason may be given for the strategical movements" of Count Gyulai who, in retiring on the northern part of Italy, is occupying a stronger position than ever, and with the advantage that every mile he retires strengthens himself, and at the same time tends°to weaken the power of the allies.
The Queen has conferred on the Earl of Derby the high honour of making him an extra Knight of the Garter. Her majesty has also graciously pleased to mark her sense of the services rendered by the Karl of Malmesbury and Sir John Pukington by conferring upon-them the Civil Grand Cross of the Order Bath. The resignation of Lord Chelmsford makes the number of ex-chaucellors five. They are Lords Lyndhursfc, Brougham, St. Leonards, Cranworth, and Chelmsford. Each draws per annum.
