Correspondence.
To the Editor of the Colonist. ; . Sin, —By your allowing me space for the following remarks—some gentlemen in connexion ,with the Board of Works may be induced to justify the plan at present adopted in the management of the Board—thereby satisfying many others besides myself, who have to contribute their quota towards defraying expenses incurred. No doubt can exist in the minds or" any of our fellow-citizens as to the fact, that great good has been effected by the making mid mending our thoroughfares. But the necessity of practising economy will become more aparent, now that we may anticipate a reduction in the rate of two-fifths, is it actually necessary out of an income of about .£I,OOO per annum, that should be paidl for the services of a Secretary, when it is a known fact, that for half that sum the duties could be efficiently performed. Also, why need the office of the Board be in the most expensive street in Nelson, when the convenience of the public might be equally well served at a much less cost. If by remodelling the present management of the Board we gained only sufficient to employ.an additional hand on the roads, the improvement would be perceptible to all. I am, Sir, yours respectfully, A RATEPAYER.
