GARIBALDI.
In the meantime a movement which the Austrians seem, at first to have regarded as an insignificant diversion was going forward in Northern Lombardy^ and working wonders for the cause of the allies. The head and soul of this movement was the well-known Garibaldi, who-at an early period of the campaign received a sort of roving commission from Kin«j Victor Emmanuel, and left the allied camp with a force of about 500O vltaliaii volunteers' with the undisguised purpose of rousing the Lombards againtst the Aum trians. His force was soon doubled. Varese, .Comr'j and the whole of the Vanteline were in insurrection before the end df May. Garibaldi was checked more than once by powerful-bodied-bf 'Austrian troops; but with the help of the populatioji'he always succaeded in ultimately beating them. ' In the first days of June ' the government of the king of Sardinia was in full operation in the whole of Northern Lombardy. The results of this movement have been extremely impor* tanti It prepared the way for the advance of the allies. That advance, almost unparalleled for decisiveness and rapidity, must now be described.
