THE WAR-
(From the Home News, June 18.) In our last we described the movements of the Franco-Sardinian and Austrian armies up to the time when they confronted each other: on Piedmontese ground, and had begun to make a few "demonstrations." At that time the Austrians occupied the line of the Sesia with their right, and the centre and left extended from the Sesia to the region of Pavia and Piacenza. The left wing of the allied army consisted of the main body of the Sardinian troop'Sj who held a line parallel to the Sesia. The French weieihassed round Alessandria. Since then arapid series of events has taken place. The'Au&rlans jiave not only been compelled to retire from Piedmont, but they may be said to have evacuated Lombarrly. While we write they are understoodsto be taking up, for a final effort, their renowned position on the lines of Mincio and Adige/ It is there that the second period of the campaign will probably be decided. We have now t > relate the incidents of the first period, which has been decided already.
