OTAGO.
On Wednesday, the 29th ultimo, his Honor the Superintendent embarked in the steamer Geelong, and proceeded on a visit to the southern ports of this province. The Geelong sailed from Port Chalmers on Thursday, the 30th ultimo, and arrived on the Ist instant at Invercargill. His Honor embarked again on Monday, the 4th, and having touched at Jacob's River, the Bluff, and the Clutha (where the Geelong remained for four days), returned to Dunedin on Monday morning last. At Invercargill a public meeting assembled at the new Court House on the morning of Monday; the 4th instant, to receive an address from his Honor. The meeting, was well attended, and the address was listened to with marked interest and attention. At its conclusion, on the motion of Mr. Bethune, the thanks of the meeting were accorded with acclamation to his Honor, and the whole was wound up with " three cheers for the Superintendent," heartily and lustily given forth. — Colonist, July 15. We have not been able to gather any distinct information as to the general opinion of the Clutha coal as a domestic fuel, but as the whole ot the cargo of the Ann Jane, within a ton or two, has been purchased, we may assume that the coal will become generally used ; its selling being the best test upon the subject. We are glad to see that Mr. Lewis is going vigorously to work; and as soon as he has obtained a lease, will send to Great Britain for a steam-engine and other machinery. We also karn from Mr. L«w'i, that in the|neighhorhood of the coal there is potter's clay of the best description—-sand and water in abundance, and ironstone has also been discovered. Mr. Lewis, who was largely engaged in coal-mining in the old country, and has great experience in the business, contemplates, as soon as the mine is in working order, establishing potteries, arid will send to the home country for brick and tile-making machines. For pottery purposes Mr. Lewis reports the coal admirably adapted.— Witness, July 23.
