Fire Engine. —The William Alfred brought a fire engine for the Nelson Urigade, and-yesterday afternoon it w?.s put into working order, and a trial made, which proved tolerably satisfactory. Of course the introduction of such a novel machine to the juvenile portion of our town, gave rise to many profound remarks, some of the garcons wisely guessing it to be a house washing machine, others looking upon it as a diabolical overgrown squirt, .whose.powers of mischief were terrible andundefined. We may ourselves hope that in the hands of the Nelson Brigade it will prove of important service in rendering us less liable to the devastating effects of the cieinent it is intended to battle with. ..••-.. Hope Sunday School —The sixth anniversary of this school took place, as we have previously given notice, on Wednesday last, the; 17th instant. The proceedings commenced with singing and prayer, and the following gentlemen addressed a large .assemblage :—Messrs. T. R. Hodder, Green, M. Campbell, Hutchinson, and Henderson The Rev. Mr. Uolamore occupied the chair. A satisfactory Eaport of the advance of the school was read by Mr. Packer, and a very excellent plan has been adopted for the encouragement and emulation of the scholars, who by good conduct have merits, or. tickets, given them, which, amounting to « given number, entitle, each to, a book out of a collection procured by the Committee from suitable works brought by' the' Chieftain. We ha?e unfeigned pleasure, in the favorable accounts of the teachers, and hope they will continue successful in their good work.
The Queen's Whakf.—Now that the daily arrival of steamers to this port proves the great requirement for a -wharf that would allow them -to come alongside at all tides, we can but regret that the repeated recommendation of the Superintendent to the Provincial Council for the extension of the Queen's Wharf, was not allowed by that body at the last session; it would' by this time have been nearly completed. Auckland sets a good example, having granted £18,000 for a proper wharf for these steamers. As it is, we can but regret it, and suffer the inconvenience of approach to vessels lying out in the stream!. • . ' ,
Dos Tax.—-This net his been productive of service 1 in the removal or better restraint of the canine population besides having contributed' the amount of about 3150 tickets, and sundry fines. Twenty, dogs destroyed prove the vigilance of the police, and should operate as a caution to any one who ma\ TLpossess a favorite animal, yet neglects to procure his life-licence in the shape of a 10s. ticket.
Tub Theatre.—On Friday evening last was played the " Warlock of the "Glen" to a rather thin house, followed by the " Spectre Bridegroom" This is the most meagre farce the: company have yet payed, although each in ember.of the corps pliyed their parts with ability. A ethnic due.tt between JSIr. Cox and Miss Seymour was deservedly "encored; and the last piece, "That Rascal Tom," we have se:in before and criticised, when under the name of " The Eton Boy." This evening wi 1 be produced the tragedy 'of " Othello," followed by a good farce. As this is* the first time that anything so difficult has been attempted here, we hops a full house .will crown their diversified efforts to please the public.
Photograph!'.—The public have again an opportunity of patronising this beautiful art, and gratifying a pardonable vanity. We have observed seme excellent portraits in the show-cases of Mr. Meluish, of Bridgestreet, and this, combined with that great desideratum —'moderate charge, should procure him a successful patronage. . : . ~
