Correspondence.
To the Editor of Me Colonist. Sm,—-Believing from the articles which have 1 appeared from time to time in your paper that | you are friendly disposed to the causa of education, I have, with a large number of your readers, to request your support and influence in urging those who form Committees to consider well the whole subject before they attempt to tinake useless innovations in the several schools. I have had my children at the school since the introduction of the present system of education into the settlement, and am well satisfied with its progress; but the Committee, from an ill-judged desire simply to " make a change" are about to alter the school hours without even consulting the convenience of parents or rate payers, or considering that what may be suitable to Nelson, for instance, will not do for distant districts where children have to go sometimes miles after school hours, in all weathers, to fetch up their cows, &c. No doubt a great improvement is going on, and Committees should be very careful how they disturb that progress by a change not required or called for by the parents themselves If later hours be sought for, we have-already evening schools provided for that purpose. It should be remembered that Committees have no practical knowledge whatever of teaching and its many difficulties, and that they should be extremely circumspect in meddling with, or disturbing, a system that is already working so creditably to the settlement. I am, Sir, your most obedient servant, ~ A RATE-PAYER. Riwaka, 26th October.
