Lectuek at the Odd Fellows' Hall.— On Tuesday evening last, a lecture was delivered at the above Hall by Dr. Blackmore; the subject was the "Philosophy of Society," and, from the careful and comprehensive way in which it was given, appeared to be highly appreciated by ,an intelligent audience. We hail this lecture as the commencement of better things in intellectual recreations, aud hope this will.be only the first of a long series. The attendance was not so numerous as we expected, but we predict something better for the future. Accident 'at Awaroa.—The friends of tin*late Mr. Rollison proceeded to Awaroa in the Australian Maid on Tuesday last,_for the purpose of bringing' over the bodies of the sufferers by the late sad accident for, interment.->: The.vessel returned to Nelson on-Wednesday evening, and the funeral will taketplacethisMa^f'Friday), at two o'clock, from the - residency? Mr. Greig, Waimea-roady '[-"■'_ AX.'A ... ' Accident ok the Beach;r6_vd.—On Tuesday afternoon ani accident occurred on the .-Beach:road which might have ended fatally. A cart,.belonging to Watts, had been left without :anyone to watch the horse, and I>y some means the animal, though .usually ay very quiet One, started off at, full speed, injudiciously followed by another driver, with the intention of stopping [him. ; This was.h&wever effected in another Way,' as it came in collision with a young horse that Mr. Sullivau was riding, when the cart was instantly overturned. Mr. Sullivan was amongst the feet of the horses, tp the imminent danger of his life, but most fortunately sustained no serious injury. Prompt assistance prevented any damage of the horses and cart, and the affair ended more happily than could have been expected. We hope that in future more care will be taken by the owners of vehicles to prevent a recurrence of such accidents, for so serious, a thing can scarcely happen twice without loss of property or life. THEATRicALS.—Mr. and Mrs. Cox, with Mr. Bertram,' returned to Nelson by the White Swan on Tuesday last, and have had a prosperous season at Canterbury. Remembering the satisfaction we felt in witnessing some of" their former theatrical representations, we are glad to see them, and say with Hamlet—" You're welcome masters,, welcome all; I am glad to see thee well. 0, my old friend! thy face is valiant since I saw thee last." As arrangements have been made towards amalgamating with Mr. Lee's company, we may expect a few evening entertainments by the combined force of bothNext Tuesday is to be the first; the pieces announced are "Ingomar," and " The Frolics of a Day." We hope they will meet with a remunerative share of public support. Spring - GRoyE Sunday -The twelfth anniversary of this school - was held on Monday last in the schoolroom, which had been tastefully decorated for the occasion. Upwards of eighty children 1 assembled, and were regaled with tea and plumcake. . At:so'clock about 100 sat dowh to tea. The Rev.' D. Dolamore took the chair in the evening,. and gave a very impressive and interesting address on the nature and object of the meeting.. The report being read, the children recited portions of Scripture, and a great number of well selected pieces, from Eliza Cook and other authors. The meeting was addressed by Messrs. Hildreth, Gardner/White, arid. Campbell, on the importance of Sabbath Schools. Much credit is due to Messrs. Higginß and Rennell for their zeal and perseverance in the work of Sunday School Instruction, as so pleasingly evidenced by the .very interesting and highly satisfactory manner in which the childreo acquitted, themselves. The subjoined report (referred to above), addressed to the chairman .of the meeting, was read and received :—" In presenting you , with the, Twelfth Annual Report of the Spring Grove Sabbath School, we feel a very great pleasure in being able to state that the school is in as flourishing a condition as it is possible to expect a Sabbath School to be iv, with so small a number of teachers. The children are (with few exceptions) diligent in their attendance, and evince considerable interest in the school; and we are proud to say it reflects the greatest honor ou them, as we do not believe that in the majority of cases, there is any or very little control exercised in compelling them to attend. The number of children attending the school is "fifty one—-boys, twenty; girls, thirty-one. The average attendance is about thirty-four. The number of
teachers are three—two malejteachers, including Superintendent, and one female teacher,' whose uniform attendance .reflects great credit on her and sets an example to others, which might be' beneficially followed^ Hoping that the religious part of the community will take a more active part in the religious instruction of the children in the Sabbath School, we beg to remain, yours respectfully, William Higgins, Superintendent; Edayard G. Rennell, Teaclier."
