Saturday, October cJ. - . Before the Resident Magistrate. Dog Nuisance.—Hans Jacobsen. a German, residing here, was charged with keeping a feiocious dog,^vhich he allowed to he at. large,'"contrary to the Act. The information was laid by Mr. J. L. Biiily, who stated that he brought the case forward only upon public grourfds; and the dog having.been destroyed in the meantime, the worthy Magistrate made the fine only Is., and the costs, amounting to 9s. more. Monday, October 11." ■ A native -was brought before the Magistrate charged with drunkenness and .disoideily conduct on the morning of Sunday. James Garrett, a youth who it appears is a stranger here, was brought up on a charge of having attempted suicide. It appeared by the evidence given by the constable tbat the prisoner had attempted to swallow a quantity of strychnine (which he had procured of Mr. Pritchard,. a chemist in this town.) The poison was taken away from him, but not before he had taken a sufficient quantity to render active medical treatment necessary. He was at once sent to the lock-up, and. the services of Dr. Bush were called into requisition. This gentleman proceeded with the treatment necessary in-such cases, and was with the prisoner "a considerable number of hours, in attendance upon whom.he was soon' joined by Dr. Wilson, the Coroner and Provincial Surgeon. By a free, use of emetics they were fortunately enabled to restore the prisoner, and subsequently by the application of stimulants,,to restore the vital energy. As some doubts seemed to exist as to the A sanity of the prisoner,- the case was remanded till, the next day, to enable inquiries being made as to the state of mind the prisoner was in at the time of committing the offence. It was said that the prisoner had found a cheque on the Wellington Bank, and having got the money for it, which he spent,- he was seized with a fit of contrition^ which, super,-' added to intoxication,.caused him .to make this attempt upon his life. ... Wednesday, October 13.' —■ Lipscombe was fined'los. and costs for being drunk and disorderly.. James Garrett, the lad who bad been re-' manded from Tuesday on a charge of attempted; suicide was again brought up. He expressed his contrition for the offence, and was conse-' quently discharged. Messrs. Wilson and Bush were present, and one of these gentlemen remarked that they considered in a case like thepresent, where they had" been called, out at night, and had to'submit to considerable personal inconvenience, the prisoner, if in a position, should' be made to render" some remuneration to the. medical attendants. 4 Tho prisoner, expressed his sincere thanks to these gentlemen for the attention they luTd paid to him; and would, directly that he was enabled to obtain employment, make every effort to" repay them for their time and services.
