RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Monday, August 16. Before the Resident Magistrate. Saunders v. Baker.—Action to recover £10. This case was commenced on the 2nd August, and was adjourned until Monday, the 16th, to allow time for the production of witnesses on the part of the plaintiff. The case occupied the Court a considerable time, and after the most patient hearing, owing to tho conflicting evidence given, the judgment was deferred.

New Assessment of the Town.—The Board of Works have commenced their duties by taking active steps towards a new assessment. This is highly creditable to them, and shews that the gentlemen who have been elected, deserve the confidence which has been reposed in them. The need of such a measure has- been severely felt T by gome; and we "have no doubt that a more proper adjustment of tlie value of local property will be regarded with satisfaction by our fellow-townspeople. The errors which had crept into our former assessment will now be rectified; and as there will no doubt be ample time left for appeal, it will result from personal idleness if each portion is not put upon a fair value.

Furious Driving.—On Sunday last, a cart containing three seamen was driven up the Haven-road, racing with another belonging to William Watts, who was driving it. At the Saltwater Bridge the cart containing the seaman caught against the stones which have been placed there for the purpose of erecting the culvert, &c, to shut out the salt water from the marsh above; the seamen were thrown out, and one, James Hutchinson, received some severe injuries, though not so important aB to cause any alarm. The case will be brought before the notice of the Kesident Magistrate this day, when further particulars will be elicited. We hope that such an expression will be given of this proceeding, as to deter others from following their example. It is moat dangerous to all foot passengers, and especially so to children. In this case none but the perpetrators of it have suffered, but another case might furnish us with a fatal instance to comment upon.
