LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
TuESDAY, APRIL 27, Present:—The Speaker and 12 members. The Attorney-General obtained leave to bring in a Bill to establish District Courts in the Colony of New Zealand. Bill read a' first time, and ordered to be read a second time on Monday. Also for a Bill to regulate the execution of Criminals. Bill read a first time, and its second reading • made an order of the day for Tuesday. Thursday, April 29. ■: Present: —The Speaker and 11 -members. There were • neither petitions or notices of motion. On the motion of the Attorney-General, the Bankers'DDrat'ft' Bill was read a: third time and1 passed, and the lion, the Attorney-General and Mr. Cutfield were deputed to convey it to' |Ke House of Representatives. The Interpretation Bill was recommitted, and' slight amendments made hi some of its clauses, after which, on the motion of the Attorney-Ge-neral, it was read a third 'time and passed. The. h6n. the Attorney-General and the hon. Mr. Cutfield being deputed to convey it to the House of Representatives. " i The Attorney-General moved the secondreading of the Coroners' Bill, the principal objects of which are to restore- to the Governor the power ;of appointing1 Coroners, at present exercised by -Superintendents, under Transfer of Powers Ordinance, to enable Justices of the Peace", in certain cases, to exercise the duties of Coroner and to hold inquests on fires, occurring/under suspicious circumstances ; another clause which the hon. Attor-ney-General proposed to introduce in, the Bill—a 'clause to provide, in c.aepk where persons are com- • mitted under Coroner's warrant, for further investigation before a Resident Magistrate, was supported by his Honor the Judge," who adverted to a recent case-where a prisoner who had been committed for trial on Coroner's warrant for murder was not present during the inquiry, and might have remained in ignorance of the evidence to bo brought against him until the day of trial. ; The Bill was passed through committee, and was ordered to be rdad a third time on Tuesday next.- :.- The House, went into committee for the purpose of considering amendments made by the House of Representatives on the Naturalization Bill. The amendments were adopted by the Council. The House went into committee on the Bill to authorise the Bishop of New Zealand to convey certain hereditaments and premises to trustees to be appointed in that behnlf by the. General Synod of the Church of Ergland in New Zealand. TheBill passed through committee, and was ordered to be read a third time on Monday next.
