Correspondence.
To the Editor of the Colonist,
Sir,—^About two years since an advertisement appeared in the fawner for nearly sjx months, offering £500 for the discovery of a workable gold-field. Letter after letter has reached England' announcing this1 seven days' wonder/ Gold has been exported,' the revenue has increased^- tand we have, been amused by Mr. Hough's wit on the one! hand, and Mr. Curtis's evasion on the other! But what.has become of the bonus? That; as ,the lawyers say, non est inventus r \t seems to have died.a natural death, and "gone to the tomb of all the Capulets;" or like some snake,' which,' after
rattling its. tail to the tuna : ,o.f "Oswald Curtis, Secretary," half the year through, has now slipped away into a hole, and the only trace that remains is a lunga promessa, con I' attenderecorto* \ "A gentleman," says Hawthorne^." is a, man of truth and honor, lord of his own actions, and expressing that lordship in his behaviour; not in any way submissive or servile, neither to persons, nor opinions, nor possessions." Some of our " mighty , merchants," as if. E.. C. calls them, seem to think otherwise ; and that if the world writes Mr. before their names, or Esq. after them, they must of necessity be geiltlemen, no matter whether they be '•■men of truth and honor" or not. S. P. TUCKER.
To tlte Editor of the Colonist. Si.n^ —I have observed in the report of the Provincial Council of March 24, that asum not lessthan £500 will be, required to put the Port-road in repair. I beg to call the attention of the public to the plan brought forward by Mr. George F. Bush, four years ago, which combines so advantages, much greater than/the Port-road, viz., the best plan for draining the town, reclaiming land, and, in fact, bringing the Port to the centre of the town. I beg to forward you a prospectus which was sent me at that time.
I am, Sir, your obedient servant,
PATRIOT,
Correspondence.
