RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Saturday, April 10. Before the Resident Magistrate. James Poole and William Salmon were summoned by Mr. Travers for having broken down his fence. The case was not proceeded with as defendants paid the coats of proceedings, and expressed regret at the occurrence. A seaman from the barque Cresswe-1, who had been fetched ashore by order of the Magistrate, in compliance with a request addressed to him for that purpose by the man, appeared to complain of the bad treatment he had received at the hands of ihe captain. He said he had been taken bad with a disease in the.chest, and had received medical attendance, that he was well enough to return to his duty last Monday, and had asked leave to go ashore with the crew on Tuesday but was refused ; the man made a rambling statement, but the foundation of his complaint of bad treatment was the refusal to permit him to have liberty ashore. The Magistrate said he did not see any cause of complaint which required his interference. The man bad been well treated, and as to his having liberty to go ashore that was a question purely within the discretion of the captain, he must therefore again go on board. After the case Had been dismissed, and while the sailor was with the police outside the Court, he called to Captain Barnett upon some excuse, and on his being told by him to make haste on board, he commenced a most violent assault, striking Captain Barnett twice upon the face, and also breaking his umbrella. The police immediately seized and handcuffed the sailor, and in this. state he was taken on board the Cresswell.
